MY STORY by Jessica Carswell, CLMA Graduate and new CLMA Course Facilitator

I myself was a student on the Bridal and Occasion Make-up course at Cassie Lomas Academy back in 2016, I now work successfully as a freelance Make-up Artist and Hairstylist in the industry and also work at CLMA as a Course Facilitator, helping students choose the right course and ensuring they get the most out of their time with us.  Here’s some quick fire questions that Students and potential Students have asked me and I think it may be helpful for anyone debating joining our Courses.

What you wanted to get into makeup? – It all stems back to my childhood (where all good things start) my mum said she’s remembers my little brothers christening, I was five, with ten minutes to go before leaving I came downstairs with a retro blue 80’s eye and a red lip, we had no time to fix it so I spent the whole day looking like Boy George and my mum said it was the happiest I’d ever been. I also wrote in my year two work book…’When I grow up I’d like to be a Mkea Artertist’, so I’m guessing it’s always been in my blood. I LOVEEEE being creative, but my patience isn’t great so Fashion design went out the window and I decided to turn to the wonderful world of Make-up.

What you were doing before? – Before I became a Make-up Artist I worked in recruitment, sales and as a receptionist. I went to University to complete a design degree for the theatre and TV, meaning I covered SFX, Prosthetics, Grooming and Ecom Make-up, which meant the Bridal and Occasion course was perfect for me!

How long you took to make a decision about your training? – Around a week, I actually paid for my course with one of my student loans (best money I’ve ever spent) I’d been thinking about it for months, my friends sister had just trained at CLMA on the Ultimate Pro course so I gave her a call and read the google reviews for Cassie Lomas and I was sold, I didn’t even come in for a tour, I just called up and booked

What you looked for in a school? – Well, I was one of those who came in thought I’d become a fully fledged working Make-Up Artist in two weeks, it doesn’t really work like that but I learnt the way to do it, by putting in a lot of hard work and I was lucky that it has made me successful in a job I love!  - I knew that CLMA would offer be the best place for me to learn the business of make-up. I also wanted a school which cared about me as a person I didn’t want to come in everyday and it be like a cattle market, learn a smoke eye move on, learn Bridal move on….I knew I needed a school which has a good course layout, a great atmosphere and somewhere I felt I was learning the business and the history of the business, not just how to do looks.

Why you finally chose Cassie Lomas? - Cassie’s knowledge and experience in the industry is unbelievable and I had heard so many amazing things! I wanted to just get going and I knew with how the classes were taught that would be the case. However what I also knew was how much Cassie nurtures people’s careers and really cares! You don’t just learn a look and move on, you are taught to understand what it is you have done wrong and how to correct it! I was lucky enough to go onto the events team and gain some experience and connections to take with me through my career.

What you took away from the course? – The course gave me all the skills I need to go out and be confident in applying Bridal and event make-up, it also gave me a massive insight into the social media background of the industry. How to market myself was a massive advantage as I started taking bookings straight away.

What are the Benefits of training in Manchester? – Manchester is a great city it’s also a creative hub and home to many of the TV, Fashion, Brand and Production companies our graduates go on to work with. There is always something going on socially and something you can get involved in to network and build connections! There are also hundreds of make-up shops to browse around and we are now based in Media City which is minutes form the Trafford centre, the Lowry theatre and museum and of course ITV and the BBC.

What’s happened since your course? – Since my course I have had a world wind three years! I became a freelance make-up artist and I also trained in hair! I work for an amazing company called The Gypsy Shrine who I’m also a brand ambassador for, I’m also a brand ambassador for Look Fantastic, which means I have the opportunity to work with loads of amazing brands and Creatives! Alongside being a Make-up Artist I work part time at CLMA as a course facilitator helping other’s to decide what course is right for them and how our amazing, fabulous Make-up school can help them achieve their dreams.
